A Clean Dryer Vent – Your Life May Depend On It!

Out of sight, out of mind! It is easy to ignore something like a dryer vent. Every time you dry a load of clothes, it does it job, quietly and unseen, venting all that hot air to the outside. Why pay attention to something so simple, so uncomplicated?

Because it can be dangerous, that’s why! As hot air flows through the vent from the dryer to the outside, it collects a small amount of lint. That lint builds up. Lint is flammable, and being in such close proximity to a hot dryer, it poses a fire hazard.

A Clean Dryer Vent Is Trouble

This is no exaggeration. Fema reports that every year in the U.S. there are around 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires, fires which result in an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million of property damage.

Obviously then, you should not ignore the state of your dryer vent. These are some of the indications that it needs to be cleaned.

  • It has been a year since it was last cleaned.
  • It takes more than one drying cycle to dry a load.
  • Your dryer gets hot to the touch suggesting it is overheating.
  • Clothes smell musty after being in the drier.

Don’t put this job off. To do so can be dangerous.

And note that there are other reasons for properly maintaining your dryer vent. Not only is a clean dryer vent much safer. It will also save you money, because increased air flow means less energy is needed to dry a load. It is also healthier. A partially clogged vent is more susceptible to the development of mold and mildew.
